The Best Movies Of The 2018-2019 Film Season

(Disclaimer: This post is the first ever guest post on LivvPreppy and it is written by my younger sister Madelyn! She is currently a senior in high school who will be attending college next year, majoring in acting and minoring in film studies.)

Over the past couple of years, I have become an avid moviegoer, anxious to see what will win big during the award show season. This year it has been my goal to see all the big movies, whether they may be comedies, dramas, documentaries, or something else. Here are my favorites of this past year.

Best Comedies

Looking for a fun light-hearted movie with a great message? Look no further! I Feel Pretty follows the story of Renee Bennett, a woman who often feels self-conscious about how she looks. After injuring her head in a spin class, she suddenly gains the confidence she has always needed. I would recommend this movie for any girls night or Sunday afternoon.

For my last Comedy, I have chosen a book adaptation that made box office history. Crazy Rich Asians will not only make your heart swoon but make you but make you want to take a trip to Singapore! This movie is charming and witty while having a great story of love and family. It makes for another wonderful movie to watch with family and friends.

Best Horror/Thriller

Although I have never been much of a horror fan, in the past year I have grown to like horrors that have gripping stories, and A Quiet Place is just that. The story follows a family that has to stay silent due to creatures that are deaf and have sensitive hearing. If they make a noise, the creatures can hear them and will attack. The film was partially written by the director and actor John Krasinski, which also stars his wife Emily Blunt. If you are looking for a film that will be slightly haunting and intriguing, A Quiet Place is a perfect movie for you!

Best Dramas

When most people think of 18th Century England they think of stuffy men with wigs and powdered faces and queens. The Favourite is just that, but in a twisted way that will never be expected by the audience. In this Comedy Drama (Dramedy) The all-star cast starring Academy Award Winning Emma Stone follows the story of a nearly ill queen, her second hand, and the rising power of a scullery maid. The relationship between the three women is ever changing and unexpected. This film is one that simply cannot be missed and will keep surprising you till the very end.

The film, Beautiful Boy, follows the heartbreaking and true story of Nic Sheff as he struggles with his addiction to Methamphetamines. Rather than other films that glorify drugs or show the struggle from one point of view, Beautiful Boy mainly follows how Nic’s addiction affects his family, in particular, his father David Sheff. The cast includes the Hollywood’s newest star as of last year, Timothée Chalamet, and his father played by the usually comedic Steve Carell. Both Chalamet and Carell’s performances are outstanding, raw, and truthful. This film is one that serves as a cautionary tale of love, loss, and hope.

(This film can be streamed now for free using Amazon Prime)

Best Musical

As a long time fan of Queen, I was anxiously awaiting the release of the biopic film Bohemian Rhapsody, and it did not fail my expectations. Rami Malek’s wonderful acting and energy brings Freddie Mercury to the screen in a way that will make fans fall in love with the band all over again. The band's iconic songs such as, “ Another One Bites the Dust”, “Killer Queen”, and “Somebody to Love” are all included and will make you want to go back in time to a Queen concert. If you are looking for a fun movie that will leave you singing and dancing, Bohemian Rhapsody will leave you happy!

Best Documentary

As a lover of biographies and true stories, I naturally love a good documentary. When I first heard the story of the three identical strangers I was immediately intrigued. The documentary follows the true story of three men who were separated at birth and follows from how they meet and their life from then on. When watching the film it seemed as though once they had all met, there would no longer be much more of a story to tell, but there is so much more under the surface. I won’t spoil what happens but will say that it will most definitely make you question things.

Xoxo, Madelyn
